When the enemy comes in like a flood, The Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard against him. [Isaiah 59:19 NKJV]
At the Breakfast held this morning at Highbridge Tabernacle, Pastor Joe shared this text. There are some places in the USA, that are coping with the current hurricanes better than others. This is because, in the time since they experienced the last hurricane, they have been erecting flood barriers.
Pastor Joe shared how, in our lives as followers of the Lord, we can experience our own personal ‘hurricanes’. They feel like a ‘flood’ sweeping over us and, sometimes, we feel unable to hold it back. BUT GOD has promised that, in these situations, the Spirit of the Lord will raise up a standard against them – He will raise up the ‘flood barriers’ to hold back the ‘flood’.
This text is particularly precious to me, as the Lord used it back at the beginning of 1970, to get me through a very big hurricane in my life. There isn’t time or space here to share the reasons for this hurricane, but it resulted in me trying to take my life because I couldn’t see any way out. I consumed as many pills as I could get my hands on, jammed a table under the door handle to stop anyone being able to get in, and turned the gas on.
I don’t remember anything after that until I came to in hospital. It was only afterwards that I was able to piece together how I was still alive. Apparently I turned the gas off, moved the table and went outside for air. The miracle was that my landlady, who was stone deaf, heard me and got help. The Spirit of the Lord had raised up a standard and stopped the flood of the enemy.
It was a while later when I came across the verse in Isaiah quoted above. I realised that it was the Spirit of the Lord, and He alone, Who had stepped in with His standard and turned back the tide of the enemy’s onslaught. It was only by the Grace of God that I survived that hurricane and am able to share my testimony with you today.
